MENCAP – Stand By Me

June 20, 2011
Mencap Keith

I was Director of Photography on two documentary short films for MENCAP, the leading UK charity for people with a learning disability. The films are being used to combat hate-crime towards people with disabilities, and the first one in the series was shown in Parliament on the 21st June as part of Learning Disability Week.

Christine’s Story tells the tragic and moving account of how her brother Keith was tortured and murdered because of his disability.

Neil’s Story describes why he was forced to move house to escape abuse and bullying.

Written & Directed by the award winning Katy Sheppard, Editing by Pete Williams, and Music by Jamie Perera

Around The World In 33 Days (Filming)

June 15, 2011
Kendal Elephant

I just go back from a long shoot overseas for fairtrade coffee brand Puro. I’m working on a film for them about the importance of ‘ethical consumerism’ and protecting our planet, documenting stories from across the globe which show the real help and impact these decisions can make.

In 33 days we gunned it through Belgium, Holland, South Africa, Singapore, Australia, Dubai, Brazil, and Peru…    …filming all the way, from a hot-air balloon over the Kruger national park to climbing up waterfalls with a coffee farmer in the Andes, sleeping and eating in aeroplanes and pick-ups.

I finally rolled sunburned and bruised into the UK last week, I need a holiday, but first the edit and a second round of filming in the Congo!

Three’a A Crowd

July 5, 2010

Just finished shooting Three’s A Crowd for talented writer & director Darren Conway from Morph Films. He wanted a documentary feel to the film and employed my services.

I shot on the 5D mk11, Michelle Tsen’s doc experience really helped while recording sound on the H4N solid state recorder. A few very nice lenses care of Christina Smith; 35mm & 85mm @ 1.4 and 24-100mm @ 4. I kept the aperture as open as possible to get the shallow depth that I love.

I fully geeked out and built my own caveman rig from an odd piece of metal i found, borrowed a manfrotto base plate, and butchered load-bearing locknut bolts from my skateboard, total cost: £3. Definitely worth investing elbow grease & a wee bit of time rather than £2000 on a zacuto rig (which is impeccably built and makes you look legit).
